Marshal Paul von Hindenburg (1847 - 1934), sitting at a strategic map. A veteran of the Franco-Prussian War, he was recalled from retirement on the outbreak of World War I, winning decisive victories on the Eastern front at Tannenburg (1914) and the Masurian Lakes (1915). He became Chief of Staff of the Third Army in August 1916, forming with Ludendorff the Third Supreme Command. The inscription at the bottom of the picture reads: 'May the spirit of 1914-15 remain with us - Von Hindenburg'.
