Engraving of Tsar Alexander II (1818-1881). Alexander II was an enlightened ruler who, the day before his death, had signed a manifesto designed to set the country on the road to constitutional government. Despite this, he survived several assassination attempts until the terrorist attack that killed him. He was succeeded by his son, Alexander III.
