The Fancy Dress Ball Season: Some Historically accurate Dresses Suitable for Coming Dances. In a bid to help out guests at fancy dress balls and 'to obviate the absurdity of not knowing what you are,' some suggestions arranged by Mrs Charles H. Ashdown, the well-known lecturer on historic costume. Fancy dress balls were all the rage in 1911 and historically accurate costumes were frequently chosen, such as at the Shakespeare Ball in June of that year. Pictured here, clockwise from top left: a Saxon gentleman, a lady of Richard II's court, a Saxon lady, a courtier of Edward IV's reign, a dame of Edward IV's reign and a page to Richard II.
