Sailors of the Royal Navy ship, HMS 'Lynx', taking in the sails during a squall, somewhere off the west coast of Africa, c.1860. HMS 'Lynx' had been sent to the region to provide help for Dr. David Livingstone's expedition, but it also acted in anti-slavery actions and many of the figures on the deck are ex-slaves, freed from an Arab dhow.
