Following Britain's declaration of war on Germany on 4 August, the Illustrated London News issues a 'Double Number', the cover of which is shown here. The British Union flag is entwined with the French tricoleur and the naval ensign of Russia, Below these are the royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom in the centre, flanked by the coat of arms of the Russian Romanov rulers and the emblem of the French Republic. Britain, France and Russia formed the Triple Entente, following the Anglo-Russian agreement in 1907.
