The disastrous hurricane in Samoa: crew of the American ship Trenton cheering the H.M.S. Calliope. In March 1889, when a strong hurricane battered the tiny bay of Apia Harbour, on the island of Upolu, destroying four men-of-war ships, two American and two German, along with many other merchant ships. 147 men lost their lives. HMS Calliope was the only vessel able to steam out of the harbour to rescue men of USS Trenton.
