Inauguration day for the Victor Emmanuel monument, known as Il Vittoriano, in Rome. The first stone of the enormous architectural marble monument to, Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy, was laid on 22nd March 1885; the architect was Count Giuseppe Sacconi. It occupies a site between the Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline Hill.
