Description | Inquest into the death of Sir Denis Anson |
Details |
Prominent personalities pictured leaving the coroner's court at Lambeth where they had attended the inquest into the death of Sir Denis Anson and Mr. William Mitchell. Anson had been part of a group of society people who had taken a midnight trip up the River Thames (a fashionable pastime at the time). Others on board included Raymond Asquith, Iris Tree and Lady Diana Manners. In high spirits, and having imbibed champagne, Sir Denis, who was only 20 years old, insisted on jumping into the river as the boat approached Battersea Bridge. Bandsman Mitchell jumped in after him in an attempt to save him. Both men were drowned. Page from The Tatler shows a photograph of the actor-manager Sir Herbert Tree, with his daughter, Iris Tree, leaving the inquest. Inset pictures show Raymond Asquith and Count Benckendorff. Benckendorff also jumped into the river in an attempt to save Anson but was fortunately saved.
