Description | Interior view of Aachen Cathedral, Germany; Second World War |
Details |
Photograph showing the interior of Aachen Cathedral, Germany, after fighting between the German and Allied armies, October 1944. This view, of the wrecked altar, shows the few remaining fragments of stained glass in the windows and the piles of rubble in the nave. Adolf Hitler, the German Fuhrer, gave the order that there should be 'no surrender' in Aachen, making the battle that raged there particularly brutal and destructive.
