Details |
IRENE CASTLE (nee FOOTE) Dancer, who, with her husband Vernon Castle were known as 'America's Dancing Sweethearts'. The pair were incredibly successful and their earnings were high. Vernon was killed in a flying accident in 1918. As a leader of fashion, she is pictured here in a pair of very elegant outfits. Pictured at the time she was due to appear as 'The Spirt of France' at the Palace Theatre in a fundraising matinee attended by General Joffre. Due to the delaying of the matinee owing to his illness, she instead appeared at the London Pavilion Matinee in aid of Lady Carisbrooke's Matinee for Lady Londesborough's Hospital and Minesweepers' Fund.
