Matsuri is the Japanese word for a festival or holiday. In Japan festivals are usually sponsored by a local shrine or temple. The majority of these festivals are held annually and celebrate that particular areas shrine deity. The festivals involve processions during which the local shrine's kami (Shinto deity) is carried through the streets.
