Details	Canvas and power: Miss M B Carstairs in her racing motor-boat, part of the Women in Sport series in the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News. Not content with being a successful yachtswoman, Marion Barbara 'Joe' Carstairs (1900 - 1993), will take the wheel of her own motor boat at the international races at Cannes. She is shown, on right, accompanied by Miss Barbara ('Bardie') Coleclough, testing her new craft at Cowes. Openly lesbian, Joe Carstairs was a wealthy British power boat racer known for her speed and her eccentric lifestyle.
