Description | Jumbo the elephant at Regent's Park 1865 |
Details |
Jumbo the African elephant at the gardens of the Zoological Society, Regent's Park, pictured after he was imported in 1865. Swapped in exchange for a rhino with the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, Jumbo fulfilled the zoo's desire to have an African elephant as well as an Indian specimen in their collection. In 1882 Jumbo was sold to P. T. Barnum, for his touring circus in North America, but died in tragic circumstances in 1885 when he was hit by a train at a marshalling yard in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada.
