King Alfonso XIII of Spain (1886 - 1941). King Alfonso was born after his father Alfonso XII died, and so was proclaimed king at birth. His mother, Queen Maria Christina ruled as regent until 1902. In 1906, Alfonso married Princess Ena of Battenberg and together they had six children, two of whom suffered from haemophilia. By 1931, Alfonso was forced to agree to elections with the public voting overwhelmingly for an republic. Alfonso did not abdicate but went into exile where he died, in Rome, in 1941.
