King Edgar is surprised to discover that Aelfthryth is a beautiful woman. He had previously sent Aethelwald to check her suitability to become the king's wife. Aethelwald lied, claiming Aelfthryth to be plain, as he had decided to marry her himself. Having discovered the truth, it is reported that Edgar subsequently murdered Aethelwald while out hunting, and married Aelfthryth
