Details |
Members of the Council of Queen Mary's Needlework Guild. On 10th August 1914 Queen Mary issued an appeal to the women of the Empire to organise a large collection of garments for those who will suffer on account of World War One. The garments were of service to soldiers, sailors, and Territorials, to their families, to the military and naval hospitals and to those among the poorer classes of the population. The more useful garments for soldiers and sailors on active service included flannel shirts, socks, sweaters and cardigan jackets, and for the naval and military hospitals, night-shirts, pyjamas, flannel bed-jackets and bed-socks.
