Description London Hippodrome, How the Elephants Come Down the Slide
Details

Diagram in The Sphere showing a cross-section of the London Hippodrome, and specifically how an elephant act in 1904 slid down a slide into the water-filled arena. 'Water spectacles' were an integral part of the Hippodrome's programme in its first decade after opening in 1900 and the theatre had a fully functioning water tank which flooded the arena in front of the auditorium whenever the arena floor was lowered using a hydraulic system.
