Details

Cholera epidemics, the 'Great Stink' and miasmas combined to create a death rate higher than at any time since the Black Death forcing reformers to face up to the need for an urban planning policy for the first time. Joseph Bazalgette (1819-1891) constructed London's first drainage system and was a notable pioneer of public health engineering.
