Lord Howard of Effingham, Admiral of the English Fleet, knighting some of his captains for their distinguished action in attacking the Spanish Armada. John Hawkins, Martin Frobisher, Roger Townsend, Lord Sheffield and Lord Thomas Howard were rewarded in this way, despite the fact that the enemy fleet was still in the Channel and posed a threat.
