Lieut-Colonel Jimmy Doolittle attaching a Japanese medal to the fin of a 500-lb. bomb on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier 'Hornet' in April 1942. On the 18th of that month Doolittle led 16 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers in an attack on Tokyo - the first American attack on Japan during the Second World War.
