Description | Manufacture of the Armstrong Gun at Woolwich Arsenal: Coilin |
Details |
Scene in Woolwich Arsenal, London showing an armstrong gun being made. This gun was introduced into the British Army in 1859 and was one of the first practical breech loading field guns of the modern era. The gun could fire shrapnel, case shot or an explosive 11.56lb. shell and was considered highly accurate. Situated near the Royal Dockyard, Woolwich first changed from a storage depot to a munitions factory at the end of the 17th century. The Armstrong Rifle factory was opened around 1858.
