Marie Stopes (1880 -1958), born in Edinburgh, she received her education in University College London, and went on to become the first female science lecturer at Manchester University. After the annulment of her first marriage she turned her attention towards the lack of understanding about sex within marriage. Her book, 'Married Love' was published in 1918, during the same year she married the aircraft manufacturer Humphrey Roe. WIth her husband's help she opened the first British contraception clinic in London.
