Details |
Mateo Moral was the author of the bomb outrage in the day of King Alfonso XVIII's wedding. On May 31st 1906, King Alfonso XIII of Spain married the English Princess Ena of Battenberg at the Church of San Geronimo in Madrid. Alfonso, reigning over a divided Spain, had survived a number of assassination attempts prior to his wedding day. Mateo Moral, an anarchist, attempted to enter the church but was denied access. He later threw a bomb, concealed in a bouquet as the wedding procession entered the narrow Calle Mayor. Ena and Alfonso escaped injury, but 20 people were killed and countless others injured. Moral exited the scene casually but was later found in a nearby village. He shot the arresting policeman before turning the gun on himself.
