Description Middlesex Pauper Lunatic Asylum Cemetery, 1851
Details

The consecration of the cemetery of the new Middlesex Pauper Lunatic Asylum at Colney Hatch, near Friern Barnet, Middlesex (North London), 1851. Enclosed and covered by a tent, the consecration ceremony was performed by the Bishop of London. In the foreground of the picture, Mr. Murray can be seen reading the deed of conveyancing, with the Bishop's proctor at the head of the table, between the Bishop and one of the asylum chaplains. The asylum later became known as Colney Hatch Mental Hospital and then as Friern Hospital.
