Resistance to the collection of rent, and the resulting evictions and disputes about the occupation of land caused unrest on the isle of Lewis, resulting in a military force being dispatched to quell the rebellion. Sketches clockwise from top right: Manor Farm, the quarters of the 'Royal Scots', husband and wife walk barefoot in the rain, a girl carrying peat in her back, a crofters' house in the Lewis, squatters at Laxey.
