Description | Mrs Charles Sweeny |
Details |
A portrait of Mrs Charles Sweeny, formerly Miss Margaret Whigham and later, Duchess of Argyll, pictured in June 1933, the year of her marriage to American golfer Charles Sweeny. The particularly sycophantic caption in The Bystander reads, 'A new photograph of Mrs Charles Sweeny looking as lovely as ever. The new lot of debs will have to work hard if they are to reach the standard set by Mrs, Sweeny (then Margaret Whigham) and her friends when they came out.' She was deb of the year when she came out in 1930 and was rarely out of the society magazines during the 1930s.
