IRENE CASTLE (nee FOOTE) Dancer, with her husband Vernon Castle known as 'America's Dancing Sweethearts'. The pair were incredibly successful and their earnings were high. And as a leader of fashion, Irene lent her name to a variety of hats, lace, dresses and toiletries bearing her name. Pictured here in mourning after Vernon was killed in a flying accident not very long after her obtained his commission in the R.F.C.
