Description New Zealand Troops with Nazi Paratroop Prisoners
Details

Two New Zealanders of the Allied army guarding a group of German prisoners, Cassino, Italy, March 1944. The Germans pictured were elite paratroops, who were taken prisoner trying to defend Cassino. Between January and May 1944 the town of Cassino and Benedictine monastery of Monte Cassino were completely destroyed as the Allied Fifth Army attempted to push the occupying Nazi troops out of their strong defensive position in the area.
