Date 1921
Description Newnham College: third year students, 1921
Details

A group of third year students at Newnham College, Cambridge University, 1921. At this time, women were not accorded equal academic rights and privileges with men at the university, and disturbances broke out following the vote by the Senate of Cambridge University to grant women titular degrees, but not full membership of the University, which was carried by 1012 votes to 370. Newnham College was 'besieged' by anti-feminist protesters, and following this, the Illustrated London News ran a feature on the students of Newnham, this picture forming the focal piece.
