"Well, yer follers this road till yer comes to an 'ole, where there used to be a signpost. Then bear left till yer sees a post with only 'oles where the arms was. Take the road facin' the biggest 'ole." This Bruce Bairnsfather illustration plays on his own most celebrated cartoon from the First World War, 'A Better 'Ole'. With Britain digging in to prepare for a possible German invasion, Bairnsfather jokes that the only way to give directions now will be using all the holes and trenches dotted across the countryside.
