'As Amsterdam cable states that "Old Bill" is Acting President of the International Commission which is sitting at the "Hotel Terrific" Paris. They are endeavouring to ascertain what plum and apple really was made of. They expect to arrive at a decision about September. Meanwhile the cuisine at the "Terrific" leaves nothing to be desired.'
One of Bairnsfather's most famous cartoons during the Great War was a disgruntled old Bill grumbling about the army issue plum and apple jam.
