Details

British Embassy staff painting their roof the colours of the Union 'Jack', in an attempt to signify their neutral presence to Nationalist bombers during the Spanish Civil War, Madrid, 1936. The Spanish Civil War, which started in 1936 between the Republican Government and the Nationalist Rebels, featured some of the earliest heavy bombing of civilian areas.
