Details |
A group of revellers raising their glasses for the photographer at The Silver Slipper nightclub. Centre of the picture at the bottom is Kate Meyrick (1875 -1933), an Irish business woman and 'Queen' of the London nightclub scene. She ran '43', a late-night jazz club at 43 Gerrard Street in Soho, was prosecuted several times for breaching licensing laws and went to prison for bribing policemen to ignore these breaches. Her book 'Secrets of the 43' was banned on its publication in 1933. Three of her daughters married peers of the realm.
