Asquith, then Home Secretary at White Lodge, Richmond Park when he was born on June 23rd 1894. It was traditional for a government minister to be present to witness the birth of a royal heir although the tradition was dispensed with before the birth of the present Prince of Wales. The scene depicts Asquith gazing awkwardly at the baby, held by his mother, the future Queen Mary, while his father, the future George V and his maternal grandparents, the Duke and Duchess of Teck look on.
