After passing through Osborne and the Naval College in Dartmouth, Prince Albert, second son of King George V and father of Queen Elizabeth II, was appointed to HMS Collingwood and went on active service. Unhappily he soon had to leave his ship to undergo an operation for appendicitis. As King George VI he ruled until his death in 1952.
