Description | Prince Carol of Romania |
Details |
Prince Carol (1893 - 1953), heir to the Romanian throne, published shortly after his father, King Ferdinand I, abandoned his country's neutrality and joined the Allied side during the First World War. Carol later renounced his claim to the throne when he left his wife, Princess Helen of Greece, for his mistress, Magda Lupescu, and went with her into exile in 1925. He returned to Romania in 1930 and replaced his son, who had succeeded King Ferdinand upon his death in 1927, as king, and was crowned Carol II. His authoritarian regime suffered under pressure from Russia and Germany and particularly from the pro-Nazi Iron Guard movement within Romania. He was deposed in favour of his son in 1940 and went into exile, marrying Lupescu and eventually settling in Portugal.
