Bringing the dead on shore at Woolwich Pier after the collision between the passenger steamship the Princess Alice and the collier Bywell Castle which had just discharged its cargo of coal. The Princess Alice sank in just a few minutes with the loss of around 640 lives. It was the worst British river disaster on record.
