Details |

Nicky was in love with Alix for a long time and his feelings were returned but Alix was deeply religious and could not bring herself to convert from her Lutheran faith to Russian Orthodoxy. She eventually relented when the family were gathered in Coburg for the wedding of Princess Victoria Melita of Edinburgh to Alix's brother Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse. The couple were murdered, along with their five children, by Bolsheviks at Ekaterinburg on 17th July 1918.
