Description | Princess Ena of Battenberg |
Details |
Entitled, 'A British Princess Who is to be Queen of Spain', a page from The Illustrated London News showing number of photographs of Princess Ena of Battenberg (1887-1969), on the occasion of her engagement to King Alfonso XIII of Spain. The only daughter of Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry of Battenberg, Ena had spent her childhood at the homes of Queen Victoria. She converted to Catholicism in order to marry King Alfonso and together they had seven children, two of whom were haemophiliacs. The couple narrowly escaped a dramatic assassination attempt on their wedding way, prefiguring a marriage that was not a success. The couple eventually separated following Alfonso's agreement to go into exile to make way for the Second Spanish Republic. Queen Ena is the grandmother of the present King Juan Carlos of Spain.
