Description | Proposed Channel Tunnel, works at Sangatte 1876 |
Details |
The works at Sangatte on the French coast for the proposed Channel Tunnel in 1876, described in The Graphic as, "this gigantic and long-talked of scheme," and, "splendid evidence of the determination and perseverance with which obstacles and impediments are met by scientific men of the present age." The tunnel workings did not make much progress until 1881 when work began in Britain, but by the middle of the decade the Government vetoed continuance of the work due to security concerns.
