Date 1914
Description Pygmalion drawn by Tony Sarg
Details

Scenes from Pygmalion, the play by George Bernard Shaw which opened at His Majesty's Theatre in London on 11 April 1914. The sketches drawn by Tony Sarg show the various characters including Mrs Patrick Campbell as Eliza Doolittle and Sir Herbert Tree as Professor Henry Higgins. The bottom right illustration shows the audience laughing uproariously at the 'effect of sanguinary language on the audience.' The Sketch magazine calls the play, 'Mr Bernard Shaw's "naughty word" play' because Eliza utters the word, 'bloody'!
