Princess Ena of Battenberg (1887 - 1969) entering the Church of San Geronimo in Madrid, under a canopy accompanied by her mother Princess Beatrice and future mother-in-law, Queen Maria Christina of Spain, on the occasion of her marriage to King Alfonso XIII of Spain. Following the wedding ceremony, the couple narrowly escaped an assassination attempt by Mateo Moral who threw a bomb, concealed in a bouquet, at the Royal carriage. The couple's marriage was not a success. Ena passed on haemophilia to two of her sons and she and Alfonso eventually separated in 1931 when they were exiled in the wake of the Second Spanish republic. Ena is the grandmother of the present King Juan Carlos of Spain.
