Portrait of Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury (1801 - 1885), British politician, philanthropist, social reformer and campaigner for the rights of children in London. Showing various scenes of destitute boys given trades at the ‘Refuge for Homeless’ at a former coach factory at 8 Great Queen Street and also ‘Chichester’ naval training ship, moored by Messrs. Money Wigram & Sons of Blackwall, Thames off Greenhithe, receiving its first intake of boys on 18th December 1866.
