Details

A railway accident at Staplehurst, Kent. The accident happened when the boat train from Folkestone (South-Eastern Railway) derailed on a defective line, killing ten people and injuring 40. Charles Dickens, Ellen Ternan and her mother escaped unhurt, though Dickens suffered psychologically to the end of his life -- he died on 9 June five years later.
