Rear-Admiral Richard Byrd (1888 - 1957), American explorer, pictured in his cold weather furs and with his dog 'Igloo'; Antarctica, c.1929. Admiral Byrd made a number of expeditions to the Polar regions and was the first person to fly over both the North and South Poles.
