Recruiting offices at Whitehall besieged by crowds of young men hoping to serve King and country, shortly after the outbreak of World War I in 1914. Lord Kitchener made an appeal for 500,000 men to form a second army; 100,000 of which were needed immediately. The response was overwhelming.
