Details

Recruiting in King Street, London, Sergeant Kite at the public house bar. On 2 August 1870, as part of the Cardwell Reforms, Parliament had voted for the recruitment of 20,000 additional men for the army, spurred on by German success in the Franco-Prussian War. It was felt that the British Army needed modernising, as well as expanding in numbers.
