7,000 pigeons are released above Wembley Stadium as trumpeters of the Household Cavalry sound a fanfare. The pigeons are bearers of Olympic tidings, a custom also practised by the Ancient Greeks. Assembled are the athletes of 58 nations, who have just marched past the king.
