Illustration of the Union-Castle Line Royal Mail Motorship 'Carnarvon Castle' passing the Needles, Isle of Wight, on its way to South Africa. 'Carnarvon Castle' gave service in World War II as a troop ship, before being returned to the Union-Castle line to resume carrying passengers and mail. She was retired from this service in 1962.
