The conditions of work and pay for Russian workers resulted in strikes for reform. On 22nd January 1905 many workers held a peaceful protest march to the Winter Palace. The crowds were met by Russian troops guarding the palace, under the instruction of The Grand Duke Vladimir troops were instructed to shoot. Hundreds of civilians were killed and injured in the massacre, now know as Red Sunday.
